1.Non lasciare la mancia. Di solito non lasciamo la mancia a nessuno, nei ristoranti esiste già il “coperto”, una tariffa da pagare a persona che può variare (1,50 – 3,50 €). Gli italiani lasciano la mancia solamente in particolari circostanze, per esempio quando c’è un gruppo numeroso di persone o ci sono bambini molto vivaci.
Do not leave a tip. Usually, we never leave a tip, when you go to a restaurant you’ll already have to pay “coperto”, a fee that may vary between 1,50 and 3,50 €.
Italians leave a tip only on particular occasions, for example when there is a large group of people or when there are very lively kids.
2. Le stazioni sono il posto peggiore in cui sostare. Se non avete un treno da prendere, vi consiglio di non stare per troppo tempo nella zona della stazione (specialmente a Milano, a Roma o a Napoli) perchè sono i luoghi pieni di borseggiatori. Quindi quando ci andate fate molta attenzione ai vostri bagagli e oggetti di valore.
Stations are the worst place to be. If you have a train to catch, I suggest not to arrive too early and to not stay in the area surrounding the station for a long time (especially in Milan, Rome, and Naples) because there are plenty of pickpockets, so please be careful to your belongings.
3. Non sempre le carte di credito vengono accettate. Generalmente per gli acquisti superiori ai 10 euro. Se siete in dubbio chiedete: “accettate le carte?” o “posso pagare con la carta?” e portate sempre qualche moneta o banconota da 5/10 euro.
Credit cards are not always accepted. Generally, if you spend more than 10 euro. If you’re not sure you can just ask “accettate le carte” or “posso pagare con la carta?” and try to bring with you some coins or 5/10 euro in cash.
4. Non prendere il taxi se non vuoi spendere molto. I taxi in Italia sono molto costosi e non abbiamo Uber o servizi simili.
Do not take a taxi if you don’t want to spend a lot of money. Taxis in Italy are expensive and we don’t have Uber or similar services.
5. Non dimenticare di obliterare il biglietto. In treno, metro, autobus o in tram devi sempre validare il biglietto. Se non trovi nessuna macchinetta e sei in ritardo, puoi sempre scrivere a mano la data e l’orario con una penna.
Don’t forget to validate your ticket. When you take the train, subway, bus or tram you always need to validate the ticket. If you can’t find any machine or if you are late, you can handwrite the date and time with a pen on the back of the ticket.
6. Se compri qualcosa prendi sempre lo scontrino. Perchè in Italia è obbligatorio per tutti i negozi rilasciare lo scontrino e consegnarlo ad ogni cliente. Se non lo prendete è probabile che il cassiere vi insegua fuori dal negozio per darvelo!
If you buy something take the receipt. Because in Italy shops must deliver the receipt to each customer, so if you don’t take it, it might be that the cashier will chase you outside the shop!
7. Fate attenzione agli orari dei ristoranti. Di solito sono aperti dalle 12:00 alle 15:00 e dalle 19:00 alle 23:00. So che in altri paesi è molto diverso, quindi tenete a mente che forse dovrete mangiare più tardi del solito.
Be careful about the opening hours of restaurants. Normally they’re open from 12 pm to 3 pm and from 7 pm to 11 pm. I know in other countries there might be very different opening hours, therefore please keep that in mind.
8. Non parcheggiate sulle strisce gialle. Altrimenti prenderete una multa. Infatti questi sono parcheggi riservati (residenti, disabili, addetti ai lavori ecc..). Potete parcheggiare liberamente dove ci sono le strisce bianche e a pagamento dove ci sono le strisce blu.
Do not park where you see yellow stripes. Otherwise, you’ll get a fine. That parking is only for residents, disabled, authorized personnel, etc..
You can freely park where you find white stripes or blue stripes (paid parking).
